Adelia!

In Memory of Adelia Mae Dundas (2011-2021)

Grade 1.5

An energetic take on a familiar hymn sung for and by many children across the world, "Adelia!" captures the infectious enthusiasm of a fiery, boisterous little red-head girl juxtaposed with the feeling of a tender embrace from her loving Lord and Savior.

"Adelia!" is written with a small-school band program in mind but has the power to sound good with any sized group. Range-wise, this piece is playable at the end of most students' first year of study. Clarinets do not cross the break and brass ranges are less than an octave. Generous doubling in all parts. Optional parts for more advanced percussionists included.

A great closer for your young band with plenty of opportunities for deeper learning and a heartbreaking/heartwarming story behind it.

Watch! This will be the tune that your students (and audience) will be humming or whistling in the halls. Celebration Galop is, first and foremost, FUN! This short work (a great opener or closer) embodies excitement, joy and lightness.

What others are saying:

~Mr. Guy Gregg, Director of Bands, Oak Creek High School

In the Little

Jelly Doughnut Woods

Often referred to as "The Waltz King," Johann Strauss, Jr. wrote nearly as many polkas as waltzes. This polka is by far his cutest...and it includes two types of bird whistles! Offering myriad opportunities to teach about color, stylistic nuance and musical independence, this light selection can easily belong in the middle or at the end of your concert program!

So far as I can tell, In the Little Jelly Doughnut Woods is not at all about jelly doughnuts (darn). The original title was Im Pawlowsk Walde, or “In the Pavlovsk Woods”, Pavlovsk being a southern suburb of St. Petersburg, Russia, which is where the piece premiered on September 6, 1869. According to naxos.com, when the audience demanded several encores, the “commercially-minded” Mr. Strauss wanted to give it a local flavor back in his hometown, thus retitling the piece Im Krapfenwald’l or “In Krapfen’s Woods,” which referred to a popular area in the far northwestern corner of Vienna.
